The Society
The Oxford University Engineering Society (OUEngSoc) is one of the largest undergraduate societies in the university. Established in 1998, the society exists to promote the engineering profession within the university and to support a body of around six hundred engineering undergraduates and two hundred graduates within the Department of Engineering Science. The society currently comprises around five hundred members and the weekly mailing list reaches over one thousand subscribers. Membership extends beyond students reading for Engineering Science and also includes Engineering, Economics and Management students, graduate MSc and DPhil students, and any other members of the university with an interest in engineering and technology.
Our Aim
The society aims to provide students with a wider overview of the various aspects of the profession and provide a deeper insight into areas of engineering that are otherwise outside the scope of the course. Furthermore the society recognises that many students are seeking employment and internship opportunities within engineering, finance, and management organisations, and hence promotes opportunities for students to meet with the representatives of sponsoring companies in a relaxed and informal environment.
What We Do
Presentations and Talks
We put on a large number of talks ranging from sponsors' recruitment events to general interest talks from innovative people in the forefront of their discipline. Many of these are organised into themed weeks, entire weeks dedicated to a particular field of engineering. This year we anticipate presenting six areas of interest:
- Aerospace
- Civil
- Biomedical
- Nanotechnology
- AI and Robotics
- Climate and Energy
Each week presents an opportunity to attend fascinating talks, debates and trips; and are not to be missed! Lectures of purely engineering interest are also held, presenting to members the world class research conducted within the Department of Engineering Science by their tutors, lecturers and supervisors.
Socials
This year we will be holding a huge fresher's social where you are invited to one of Oxford's top cubs to have a few drinks on us and get to know engineers from around the university. We hold various socials throughout the year so you'll have plenty of opportunities to meet with your peers. The society also hosts networking sessions over the course of the year, which provide members with the perfect opportunity to meet sponsors and prospective employers in a more relaxed and informal setting. Of particular success last year was the "Meet the Sponsors" event at which students and representatives from sponsoring companies met in the Randolph Hotel to discuss employment and internship opportunities whilst enjoying wine and canapés.
Trips
Throughout the year the society organises a variety of trips to locations of engineering interest, usually as part of a relevant themed week. In previous years these have included EADS Astrium and Prodrive. These trips provide our members with the opportunity to meet those with similar interests in the wider engineering community and the chance to experience engineering in industry up close, hopefully aiding members in their future career choice.
