An Introduction to OUEngSoc

The Oxford University Engineering Society (OUEngSoc) was established in 1998 and has grown to become one of the largest societies within the university.

It exists to support both undergraduate and graduate Engineering students. We aim to promote the Engineering profession and those jobs associated with the skill set provided by an Engineering degree.

Over 500 paying members with a mailing list that reaches around 1000 students.

Our membership comprises students from a range of backgrounds: Engineering Science, Materials Science, Engineering Economics and Management and Physics to name but a few.

The society recognises that previous members have gone on to careers within Engineering, Finance and Management organisations and hence seeks to provide opportunities for students and such companies to interact.

Mathys & Squire Intellectual Property

Website

The recruitment of graduates is a very important part of the development of professional attorneys at the firm and, in recent years, we have increased the number of recruits we seek to appoint annually at this entry point to the firm.

We are proud of our Graduate Training and Development programme, which has been refined over a number of years of experience. Graduate recruits, designated as Technical Assistants, receive the best possible grounding in the understanding and application of Intellectual Property (IP) Law.

As such, our policy on Training and Development is formalised and provided to all new recruits. Our aim is to train and develop for the long term, looking for those who join us to become future partners of the firm.

Much of the training and development is provided ‘on the job’. We aim to provide our Technical Assistants with the opportunity to be involved not only in searching, drafting and the prosecution of applications, but also in more advanced IP matters such as opposition, litigation and licensing. Opportunity will also be made available when appropriate to attend Oral Proceedings before the European Patent Office.

In addition, we run ‘in-house’ tutorials to accommodate Technical Assistants at all levels of part-qualification, including programmes to prepare for UK Advanced Level examinations and the European Qualifying Examination. Graduate recruits typically attend the Certificate in Intellectual Property course and the European Qualifying Examination course at Queen Mary, University of London.

Training and development of graduate recruits is predominantly based at our office in Central London, providing ease of access to the Chartered Institute and other useful resources and facilities.

Our recruits are provided with challenging work and a high quality of supervision, to stimulate their development. However, work is carried out in an informal and sociable environment and there are plenty of opportunities to take part in recreational and social events with peers and other colleagues at the firm.

We are seeking to recruit up to six graduates in 2012, either direct from University or with some commercial/industrial experience, in a range of science and engineering disciplines, including Physics, Engineering Science or Electronic Engineering.

Applicants should have a good degree from a leading university, great attention to detail, excellent written and spoken English, and a demonstrable curiosity about scientific and engineering developments.

Applicants should send a CV with a covering letter either via email to grads@mathys-squire.com.

EDF Energy

Website

Our goal in life is to bring affordable, low-carbon energy to everyone. Easy to say; definitely not easy to achieve. In fact, it takes all of the effort and ingenuity we can muster. Rest assured, there's plenty of both here at one of the UK's largest energy companies (and a major part of one of Europe's biggest energy groups).

It's certainly paying off, all that energy, enthusiasm and expertise. Today, we're the country's top producer of not just electricity but low-carbon electricity. But there are even bigger challenges ahead. And we need even sharper minds and smarter ideas to solve them. Could you help us shape the UK's energy future?

To meet all of the technical and commercial demands of building the UK's low carbon energy future, we need to develop a new generation of talent right across our business. That's why we offer so many different Graduate Programmes.

From the engineering challenges of building and running nuclear power stations to the financial, logistical and human aspects of managing an ever-changing business, the scale and scope of our opportunities is enormous. Whichever path you take, expect real responsibility from day one and plenty of exciting twists and turns along the way as you contribute to a better energy future for the whole of the UK.

If you're a science or engineering student who wants to become an expert in nuclear power, this is a great way to start. But don't just take our word for it: eight leading industry associations have also given it their accreditation.

12 months intensive training will give you a solid grounding in various aspects of the operation of nuclear power plants. You'll spend time working in a power station, learning from some of the world's leading nuclear power specialists, and begin your journey towards chartered status. After a year, you'll be ready to take on a full-time role and contribute to a low-carbon energy future.

CHP Consulting

Website

Established in 1990, CHP has grown steadily and had a turnover of over £27m in 2011.

Our clients include top banks, equipment manufacturers and finance companies such as Bank of America, Barclays Asset Finance, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, HBOS, Hitachi Capital, ING Lease, Lloyds TSB, National Australia Group, RCI Financial Services, Royal Bank of Scotland and Textron Financial.

CHP was named in The Sunday Times' Best 100 Small Companies to Work For in 2005 and 2006, and has received the Best Companies Accreditation from 2007 to 2012. We were first awarded the Investors in People standard in 2005 and met the revised standard in 2007.

Our London office houses consultants through the five-week induction. This is the site most people who work in the UK come back to at some point during the week, to catch up with what's going on and talk to friends on different projects. The bulk of the week is spent on client sites and these are as close as Surrey or as far-flung as Sydney and Boston. It's not everyone's desire to work on the other side of the world, so we don't enforce this - it's a personal choice and we respect that.

Through the first few years of your career, you can expect to work on the different parts of our standard project lifecycle. The usual starting place will be learning to develop our product; so you'll be doing software development on the client site or in the London office. This gives you an understanding of what the product is doing, while allowing you to get to grips with the technologies we use and the finance or business side of the role. After this you'll move through software design, user acceptance testing, training, data migration, requirements gathering and business process re-engineering.

While you are busy filling your head with knowledge, you will no doubt be keen to indulge in the other aspects of CHP life - the fun stuff! One of the most common comments we hear from our people is that they have never worked with such a good bunch of people and that is something we are both proud of and keen to encourage. You will find a sociable group of colleagues with a wide array of interests, including running, football, rugby, surfing, squash, fine dining and photography to name but a few. CHP faces can regularly be seen in a local bar of an evening - which can be ideal when you first move to London, and maybe don't know many people.

Company events such as football tournaments and karting challenges take place throughout the year and projects have their own milestone celebrations on a regular basis. Depending on the achievement, this could be a meal and drinks at a London hotspot, skydiving in Spain or relaxing in the natural spas of Norway. The highlight of the year is without doubt however the annual conference. Whether this is in Monte Carlo, Dubai or somewhere closer to home, it never fails to produce lots of fun and memorable stories.
